This Peru travel guide is everything you need to know before your first trip in 2026.
Peru is not just Machu Picchu. It’s the #1 most diverse country for travelers in South America. In one trip you can see desert dunes, snow mountains at 5,000m and Amazon jungle.
3 Reasons Why Peru is Trending in 2026:
- Voted World’s Best Culinary Destination – 9 years in a row
- New direct flights from USA to Cusco – no more Lima layover
- Machu Picchu Circuit 4 tickets – more availability than before
Why Visit Peru in 2026?
Peru is the only country where you can have world-class food, Inca history and adventure in the same day. Lima is the gastronomic capital, Cusco is the historic capital, and the Sacred Valley is the adventure capital.
If it’s your first time, you need at least 10 days. Don’t rush.
The 3 Regions of Peru: Where to Go?
Most first-timers make the mistake of staying only in Cusco. Peru has 3 totally different worlds:
| Region | Highlights | Best For | Altitude |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coast (Costa) | Lima, Paracas, Huacachina, Nazca | Food, desert oasis, history | 0m |
| Andes (Sierra) | Cusco, Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain, Arequipa | Treks, Inca ruins, culture | 2,400m – 5,200m |
| Jungle (Selva) | Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado, Manu | Wildlife, Amazon lodges | 200m |
Pro Tip: Don’t mix Coast and Andes in 2 days. Your body needs to acclimatize. That’s why How to Avoid Altitude Sickness in Cusco is your most important reading.
Best Time to Visit Peru
PEAK & PERFECT (May, June, September): Blue sky, green mountains. Best photos. This is when we run our Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu and Inca Trail tours. Book 3 months ahead.
HIGH & CROWDED (July, August): Dry but packed. Prices 30% higher. Machu Picchu tickets sell out.
GREEN & CHEAP (November – March): Afternoon rain in Cusco, but mornings are clear. Great for Rainbow Mountain Peru Tour with fewer people and for Lima beach season.
Local Secret: September is our favorite month for this Peru travel guide. Dry, less tourists than July, and the flowers in Sacred Valley are blooming.
The Perfect Peru Itinerary for First Timers
If you have 7 DAYS – The Classic
Lima (1 day) -> Cusco (2 days) -> Sacred Valley (1 day) -> Machu Picchu (1 day) -> Rainbow Mountain (1 day) -> Cusco (1 day)
If you have 10 DAYS – Our Most Recommended Peru Travel Guide Itinerary
This is what we recommend to 80% of travelers.
Day 1-2: LIMA – The Food Capital
Stay in Miraflores. Eat ceviche at La Mar, walk the Malecon. Buy your SIM card at the airport.
Day 3-4: CUSCO – Acclimatize
Fly early to Cusco. Day 3 is ONLY for acclimatizing. Walk slow, drink coca tea. On Day 4, do City Tour + Sacsayhuaman.
Day 5: SACRED VALLEY
Pisac market, Ollantaytambo fortress. Sleep in Ollantaytambo – it’s at 2,792m, you sleep better than in Cusco.
Day 6-7: MACHU PICCHU
Train or trek. If you have time, the 5-Day Salkantay Trek is 10x better than just the train.
Day 8: HUMANTAY LAKE or RAINBOW MOUNTAIN
Choose one day hike. Not sure which? We compare them in Hiking Peru Cusco: 3 Best Treks to Machu Picchu & Beyond.
Day 9-10: LIMA – Back & Fly Home

Is Peru Safe?
Yes, Peru is safe for tourists if you use common sense. We wrote a full guide about it here: How Safe Is Peru? Real Insights for Trekkers and Travelers.
Tourist areas in Cusco, Lima Miraflores/Barranco and Arequipa have Tourist Police 24/7. The risk is petty theft in markets and fake taxis. Use Uber in Lima.
5 Mistakes First-Timers Make in Peru
- Booking Machu Picchu for the day after landing. You will get altitude sickness.
- Drinking tap water. Never.
- Booking the cheapest Salkantay tour. That means bad food and 20 people in a group.
- Only staying in Cusco. Sacred Valley is lower and warmer.
- Not booking Machu Picchu tickets in advance.
