DIETARY NEEDS
Yes, we do cater to any dietary restriction. We have had many people join our trips who are vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, and have various other intolerances and/or allergies. Just inform us well in advance of your specific needs!
WHEN TO GO AND DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY
March/April to November or the dry season. (Dec to Feb/March or wet season: rainfall and snow can block the pass and cancel the trek though we can arrange the trek during the wet season). This trek is rated as a moderate to strenuous (intermediate) hike considering the high altitudes and length of walking. It is recommended that you acclimatize in Cusco for 2-3 days before trekking.
WEATHER & WHAT TO BRING ON YOUR TREK
Weather on the trek and in Cusco
The weather varies a lot across Peru, having 28 climates and 84 of the worlds 104 ecosystems. Cusco is set high up (3,380 mts, 11,089 ft) in the Andean Mountain Range and the dry season (winter) is from Mar/April to October/November with the wettest part of the year (summer) being December through March. The weather for trekking is pretty much the same year round, with the main difference being the amount of rainfall. During the dry season, most days are dry and clear, but high-altitude mountains always have the potential for rain and/or snow so it is essential to come prepared for all types of weather regardless of the time of year.
The Rainbow trek is very high altitude, therefore the weather can be quite cold and unpredictable. The nights on this trek are usually around 20F/-7C. During the day it can get quite warm if the sun is out; anywhere from 60-75F/15-24C. Keep in mind, if the weather is rainy or cloudy it will be colder, and that the weather can change in an instant, particularly when up at the high-altitude passes. It is often quite windy at the top of the passes as well. As with any high-altitude trek you’ll need to bring plenty of layers to adjust to the fluctuating temperatures and conditions as well as appropriate sun/rain protection.
Cusco weather: Cusco is always very cold at night due to the high altitude. It is regularly around 40F/4.4C at night so bring a nice warm jacket for nighttime walking in town. It is warmer in Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley and Aguas Calientes as these areas are lower altitudes than Cusco and the trek.
What to bring: for your trek
Everything you need for the day should be kept in your daypack that you carry because all the items you leave with your porter will not be available to you until the evening at the campsite. It is recommended not to hike in cotton or jeans in the event of rain as cotton takes a very long time to dry. It is also recommended to bring true hiking boots or trail running shoes as regular running shoes do not get very good traction, especially when it has rained.
Sleeping bags and walking poles (poles must have intact rubber bottoms)
Recommend a sleeping bag rated for 20F/-7C or below for this trek
Sleeping bag liner (for your sleeping bag if you wish)
Mattress pad – while we provide a mattress pad, being rested is essential for a great hiking experience and we find that sleep habits are very individualized. Therefore we recommend bringing your own pad that you know you are comfortable sleeping on, as well as any other sleep items you might want to have (camp pillow, etc).
Sunscreen: the sun is very strong in Cusco
Sun hat
Sunglasses
Lip balm
Hiking shoes/boots with good, grippy tread
Optional: microspikes in case of excessive snowfall (rare)
Hiking pants (or shorts) and shirts (layers)
Layers – long underwear and/or warm sleep pants for cold nights
Hand warmers if you wish
Warm hat, gloves, scarf and thick warm socks (or you can buy a traditional Peruvian hat and scarf – they are beautiful!)
Daypack and rain cover
Rain gear – rain jacket and rain pants (optional for the pants), can buy an inexpensive poncho before the trek
Cash for tipping porters (USD or Peruvian Soles are fine), cooks, horsemen, guides, buying items along the trail, for in town, emergencies, etc. Note: Cash should be in perfect condition (ripped, damaged bills of any kind are NOT accepted anywhere in Peru)
Swim suit, flip flops, towel for any hot springs you may visit (not every trek/trip has this) if you wish to go
Sandals
Torch/flashlight/headlamp (and batteries)
Insect repellent if you
Extra snacks if you wish (beyond snacks provided I by us)
E.g. if you have a favorite protein bar as Cusco doesn’t sell items like this
First aid kit, including blister protection (though your guide will have one, you may wish to carry one of your own)
Personal medication and toiletries you might want/need
Camera, extra memory cards, batteries and solar panel/power bank
Water bottle or water bladder to refill
Passport (must be valid 6 months past your final travel dates for most countries)
Copies of passport (keep copies separate, give to travel friends to keep, etc)
Power plug adapter
Travel lock(s) approved by TSA (or they cut them off – US only)
Tickets, itinerary, emergency contact information
Any medications you currently are taking or need/may need (see suggestions below)
Small quick-dry pak towels and/or compostable wipes for a quick wipe down at the end of the day
What to bring: medications – medications are optional and depend on your specific needs
Antibiotic for travelers diarrhea or UTI
Antibiotic for a severe bacterial infection
Medication for upset stomach/indigestion
Medication for prevention of altitude sickness (requires a prescription from your physician and has contraindications for certain people and potential side effects)
Anti-inflammatory medication (some people find this is useful for prevention of altitude sickness as well. Speak with your physician for more information)
Anti-diarrhea medication
Anti-nausea medication for motion sickness/altitude sickness if needed
Cold/flu medication
General pain killer/fever reducer
Vaccinations – recommend bringing all boosters up to date (MMR, tetanus, etc)
COVID19 negative test result (currently within 72 hours of departure) and eventually will likely need a COVID19 vaccination card
We have blogged about what we bring and you can use it as a general guideline if you wish: What To Pack For Peru Trekking
View latest travel advisories and recommended vaccinations and medications for the regions you plan to visit. For Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu there are generally no vaccinations required. If you are going to the jungle or any other higher risk area you may need: yellow fever vaccine, medicine for malaria, typhoid vaccine, etc. Click here for updated info: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/peru.aspx NOTE: Please consider visiting your doctor several weeks before your trip to discuss any health restrictions you may have, medications he/she might recommend for you personally, and to seek more information about any vaccinations or medications recommended for Peru (or any of your other destinations). Additionally: speak with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter and/or prescription medications alone or combined.
WHAT TO CARRY – DAYPACKS
On the trail you should carry a day pack with your camera, water bottle or bladder, snacks, hand sanitizer, face mask, cold weather clothing and rain gear or poncho in case of rain (unlikely in dry season – May to October) and anything you will need before dinner as horses do not walk alongside you. A recommended packing list is sent after you book the trip and can be found below under the “what to pack for your trek” tab. We will provide you with a dry bag for your overnight gear to be carried by horses. Your bag will be waiting for you at every campsite. Yes we do offer luggage storage and most hotels/hostels in Cusco also offer this service.

Just returned from an amazing five-day trip to Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Patabamba, and Palccoyo, all organized by David Aragon Villagra at Cachi Life! From the very beginning, David was extremely responsive and helpful, answering all my questions promptly and making the planning process easy and stress-free. Everything throughout the trip was smooth and well-coordinated. When I arrived in Cusco he sat down with me and gave me a detailed run down of the plans for the week. A special highlight was my guide, Frankin Aragon Villagra, who over three days took me through the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Patabamba. He is knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about sharing details of the history, culture, flora and fauna of his home region. I learned a lot!! I always look to support locally owned businesses when I travel, and Cachi Life truly stands out as a well-connected family-run company that provides a personalized touch. As a solo traveler, I felt completely safe and cared for by the Cachi Life Team! I highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Peru—especially if you’re looking for a more authentic and thoughtfully organized experience!!Posted on Warren CVerified Friendly and knowledgeable tour company creating memories of a lifetime We did a 5-day tour with Cachi Life Peru, including 3 days in and around Cusco and 2 days in Machu Picchu. Price was very reasonable and Franklin was a great tour guide. They booked everything for us, so we didn’t need to worry about anything other than our flights to Cusco. The first day included a buffet lunch that was delicious and had many options. Franklin was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot about the history of Machu Picchu and the sacred valley. I highly recommend booking with them!Posted on kerbuck11Verified Best tour!!!! David was an excellent tour guide. From the first moment of contact he was informative and responsive. He provided great options especially since we were traveling with a 5 & 7 year olds he helped us navigate challenges and brought us to a beautiful restaurant on the water after our tour of Machu Picchu! Highly highly recommend Cachi Life Peru!Posted on Lilyloveblacklab425Verified Wonderful experience for 1st time solo traveler After my business trip to Peru, I booked 2D/1N tour to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu with Cachi Life. David was prompt in communication throughout. He met me the evening before the tour convened to give me the details, etc. That was very helpful! For the Sacred Valley tour, I opted for Chincero, Moray and Maras Salt Mines, instead of Pisac, which David was able to accommodate. The Machu Picchu tour was seamless. Julio, the guide was awesome and very knowledgeable. All in all, I highly recommend Cachi Life!Posted on Inspire65446209466Verified Let Cachi Life Peru guide you on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu This is an amazing journey. If you haven't been before, make it happen! Cachi Life Peru provided the perfect experience. Our tour group was smaller, so we never felt like part of a herd. Our Chasqui (porters) and cook made the journey so much easier. They knew our names and were always looking for a way to help. We were traveling in mid-January, which meant slightly cooler temperatures (daytime highs in the 50-60's F, nighttime lows 30-40's F -- or 10-15 C and 0-5 C respectively) and some overcast and lightly rainy days. Wow! colors came alive. Every ecosystem was simply more beautiful. There were less travelers on the trail. For us it was the perfect time to trek the pilgrimage towards Machu Picchu. Despite the cooler temps and intermittent use of our rain ponchos, our Chasqui, Cook, and Guide cheerfully made this weather cheery. We slept warmly at night. Warm meals and shelter from the elements in camp, warm boiled water to wash our hands and face in the morning. Modesto, Esteban, Jose, Mateo, Vicente, Gabino, Samuel, and Alejandro ... you are the best! Someday we hope to be as good a Chasqui as you were on our trip! Speaking of which: they were meticulous in boiling water and cleansing our food and camp. We simply had no worries about water- or food-borne illness. And the meals were not simply delicious and warm, but also were perfectly balanced. If you pay attention to your macros (carbs, proteins, and fats), and appreciated fresh ingredients from all 4 food groups, you'll have no concerns about having delicious energy for your hike. I don't think we had the same meal twice during our 4 days. We didn't eat at restaurants ... a professional chef brought excellent cuisine to us. Our guide (Miguel) knew how to help us move along without rushing. We never felt hurried, and although our small group had various fitness levels, he helped us travel at a perfect variety of paces. We stopped to take a picture, or ask a question, or notice anything of interest, at our own wish. Yet we never seemed to leave or arrive too early or too late. He could offer insights into the people, the history, culture, flora and fauna, geography, and a host of other perspectives that helped us connect with the trail, the country, the Inca, our group, and ourselves. If you could request a guide, ask specifically for "Miguelito." On a personal level, I'll always be grateful for his rescuing my glasses from a precipice, and for strengthening within us a connection with Pacha Mama. The Sun Gate and our day in Machu Picchu were magical. If you go, make time to hike Wayna Picchu as well, the vistas and perspective will uniquely connect you to the geography. The value of these and other Incan sites really make this site a gem within the cultural and natural treasures of the world. Cuzco is a charming and vibrant city. The trail is a connection to culture and history that a bus ride to Machu Picchu cannot confer upon you alone. Machu Picchu is beyond amazing. Cachi Life Peru, our Chasqui, and Miguel made this experience a lifetime memory. Thanks! By Greg J on Feb 21, 2026
EXCELLENT Based on 6 reviews Posted on Facebook Re StTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Facebook. Gorąco polecam treking z Cachi Life. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone in this group who have been so incredibly helpful in answering my questions before I started my adventure. I truly appreciate each one of you! As I wrap up this unforgettable journey, I want to give a special shoutout to my amazing tour guide in Machu Picchu, David Aragon Villagra of Cachi Life. I had the best time with his service, and absolutely recommended to those looking for local guides. I chose to support locally owned businesses, which is why I booked the 2-day, 1-night Inka Trail to Machu Picchu. This experience allowed me to explore the stunning ruins along the way, including the breathtaking Wiñaywayna. David took care of everything—transportation, hotels, and all the necessary tickets for the tour—making the entire experience seamless and enjoyable. What impressed me most was David's extensive knowledge. With years of experience under his belt, he is an expert guide who truly brings the history of the Incas and Peru to life. His insights into science and astronomy beautifully connect to Inca history and civilization, enriching my understanding of this magnificent country. I feel so fortunate to have learned so much from him, and I’m excited to share this knowledge and encourage others to experience the wonders of Peru for themselves. And if you're a foodie like me, be sure to ask David for his fantastic recommendations for local cuisine in Cusco—you won’t be disappointed! And yes David is a great photographer! My photos here are captured by him. Once again, thank you all for your support, and a huge thank you to David for making my adventure unforgettable! 🌄❤️Posted on Facebook Leah PumarenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Facebook. I have been in contact with so many tour operators but David from Cachi Life stood out! He was able to answer all my questions right away and all the information was explained well. When the time came to pay i was very hesitant because I didn't know him but have read all positive reviews from previous clients which gave me a peace of mind. I wanted to pay half but he said to just pay the deposit, which tells me that he will not run away with our $$ :) Prior to our arrival David informed us that Franklyn will be at the airport to pick us up, which they were and in time. Let’s just say that Franklyn and staff took care of us from start to finish! They were very accommodating, made sure we were comfortable, gave us coca leaves and other things so we don't suffer from acclimation. Because, i had issues with acclimation, Franklyn brought me oxygen, hiking sticks, carried our jackets, water and food which helped me climb Rainbow Mountain and Machu Picchu. Mind you, we have been to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, UK, Iceland, Ireland, Bahamas, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Belize, Honduras, Doninican Republic, etc.. but because of Franklyn, Peru is the most beautiful place we have ever been. Overall, Cachi provided us with everything we needed for our tour. Our shuttles, tour guide, and entry tickets to each place were included. WELL worth the price! We were also fortunate to meet the owners, who were great guys and walked us through everything we would get. Highly recommend Cachi if you're looking for a great, safe time in Peru!Posted on Facebook Lindsey ReneeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Facebook. Fortunately used Cachi Life for two different day tours during my stay in Peru. Took the vistadome/train/buses to Machu Picchu, and the process could not have been any smoother. They had everything perfectly coordinated to make the trip comfortable and easy to navigate. Also had the privilege of doing a tour in the local Rayan community, which was an amazing experience. David, our local tour guide was so passionate about his job and sharing with us the culture of his country. We hiked a mountain to the local community, offering beautiful views and a stellar waterfall. Spent the day learning how the families lived off the land and shared a meal with them that we helped them prepare. Would definitely recommend if you want to try something outside of the typical touristy things to do!
